Kobe: Japan’s Gateway to the World

Nestled between the dramatic peaks of the Rokko Mountains and the sparkling waters of Osaka Bay, Kobe stands as one of Japan’s most sophisticated and historically significant port cities. As one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade in the 19th century, Kobe evolved into a unique multicultural hub, a heritage preserved today in the European-style mansions of the Kitano district and the vibrant streets of Nankin-machi, one of Japan’s three largest Chinatowns.

Modern Kobe is defined by its resilience and cosmopolitan flair. The city’s central district, Sannomiya, serves as a hub for shopping and transit, while the Harborland and Meriken Park waterfronts showcase iconic landmarks such as the red-latticed Kobe Port Tower. A bustling port city, Kobe has a population of about 1.53 million people, and it is home to the shoe company ASICS.

Beyond its urban charm, Kobe is a gateway to diverse experiences, from the ancient hot springs of Arima Onsen to the coastal beauty of Suma Beach.

We were there on a bucket-list mission: to feed Roy Kobe beef on his birthday.

Kobe Japan

Kobe Beef

The history of Kobe beef is rooted in the isolated mountainous terrain of Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture, where Tajima cattle—a strain of Japanese Black (Kuroge Washu)—were originally bred as hardy work animals for rice cultivation. Because the rugged landscape limited crossbreeding, the lineage remained remarkably pure. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, a ban on meat consumption was lifted, and Westerners in the port city of Kobe began praising the exceptional flavor of the local beef, eventually cementing “Kobe” as a global mark of prestige.

Culinary training for this prestigious career can take 5 to 10 years.

The process of producing authentic Kobe beef is defined by rigorous, uncompromising standards. To earn the official seal of the Kobe Beef Marketing and Distribution Promotion Association, the cattle must be purebred Tajima born and raised in Hyogo.

The secret to its legendary “shimofuri” (marbling) lies in a specialized diet of high-quality grain, fiber, and clean water, alongside a stress-free environment that encourages the development of intramuscular fat. Contrary to popular myths about daily beer massages, the reality is a meticulous long-term feeding program lasting roughly 30 to 36 months. The final product is graded on strict criteria, including a Marbling Ratio (BMS) of 6 or higher, ensuring a melt-in-the-mouth texture and a high concentration of oleic acids.

Authentic Kobe beef restaurants often require reservations at least one month in advance, particularly for dinner. Our choice for Roy’s birthday dinner was Kobe Steak Ishida.

Ishida has two locations. We dined at this one.

Everything about the meal was simply perfect. It was not inexpensive, but it was a bucket-list splurge we could not resist.

Suma Beach

After dinner, we strolled along Suma Beach.

Suma Beach is a prominent, roughly one-mile stretch of coastline in Kobe’s Suma Ward and is recognized as one of the Kansai region’s most popular seaside destinations. Known for its white sand and calm waters, it offers panoramic views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and the Rokko Mountains.

The beach is culturally significant, appearing in Japanese literary classics like The Tale of Genji. It sits directly in front of JR Suma Station, making it easy for us to access a ride back to our hotel in Kyoto.

Accommodations

Our hotel was in Kyoto, but there are several hotels in Kobe, such as Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel (4.3 stars), Kobe Portopia Hotel (4.3 stars), The Royal Park Canvas Kobe Sannomiya (4.2 stars), and Centurion Hotel & Spa (Vintage Kobe) (4.2 stars). In fact, there are almost 200 hotels in Kobe, so you have plenty to choose from.

There are also more than 150 Airbnbs there.

Getting There

It was a little over an hour subway ride from Kyoto to Kobe. Like in China, the subways were very crowded.

We exited at Sannomiya Station, and our restaurant was about a one-minute walk away.

We caught our subway home from the JR Suma Station.

There’s an airport there (Kobe Airport) that offers mostly domestic flights, although international routes began in 2025. In addition, there’s a high-speed ferry that connects Kobe Airport to Kansai International Airport (KIX). The ride takes approximately 30 minutes.

Getting Around Kobe

Once arriving by subway, we walked everywhere, but it’s easy to find transportation in Kobe.

Kobe has an extensive rail system for navigating both the city and the broader Kansai region. There are also monorails, ropeways, and buses. Finally, multiple transportation apps operate in Kobe, including GO, Uber, and DiDi.

Best Times to Visit Kobe

Spring (March–May): Ideal for cherry blossoms and mild temperatures. The Kobe Festival in May features large parades.

Autumn (September–November): Considered the most beautiful time due to stable weather and vibrant fall foliage, especially on Mount Rokko.

Winter (December–February): Cold but sunny. Kobe Luminarie, a massive light festival in memory of the 1995 earthquake, is held annually in late January or early February.

We were there in August.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Kobe offers a harmonious blend of cosmopolitan luxury and coastal serenity. For us, it was a bucket-list adventure: eating Kobe beef. Complementing this rich culinary experience was our stroll down Suma Beach, a site that has inspired poets for centuries and serves as a key setting in the classic literary work The Tale of Genji.

Together, these experiences captured Kobe’s unique appeal: a city where elite gourmet traditions meet historic, sun-drenched coastlines.
